DTF Press Instructions

For a professional finish, application matters as much as print quality. Follow these press instructions to achieve strong adhesion, clean edges, and a premium feel—with consistent results across repeat production.

These are general best practices designed to work across most heat presses. Fabric type, press style, and garment coatings can affect outcomes, so always run a quick test press when starting a new material.

What You’ll Need

  • A quality heat press (consistent heat and pressure)

  • A lint roller

  • A clean garment (dry, flat, and wrinkle-free)

  • Parchment paper or a protective finishing sheet (recommended)

  • A flat, firm pressing surface (avoid uneven seams/zippers whenever possible)

Step-by-Step Pressing Instructions

1) Prep the Garment

  • Lint roll the pressing area thoroughly (especially on cotton and fleece).

  • Place the garment flat and smooth on the press.

  • Pre-press the garment briefly to remove moisture and wrinkles and to warm the fabric surface.

Why this matters: Moisture and wrinkles reduce adhesion and can cause texture issues.

2) Position the Transfer

  • Place your DTF transfer ink-side down on the garment.

  • Ensure placement is straight and aligned before pressing.

  • Avoid pressing over thick seams, pockets, zippers, collars, or heavy garment texture when possible.

Pro Tip: Use a measuring guide for consistent placement when doing multiple garments.

3) Press With Firm, Even Pressure

  • Close the press with firm, even pressure across the full design.

  • Maintain consistent pressure from edge to edge—uneven pressure is one of the top causes of lifting.

Important: A press that’s too light may not bond properly. A press that’s too heavy can distort fabric or affect finish depending on material.

4) Peel Correctly

Peel method depends on the specific film type and how your press behaves.

  • If your film peels smoothly right away: peel as directed and continue to finishing press.

  • If the film resists, stretches, or pulls the design: let it cool slightly and try again.

  • If any edges lift: lay the film back down and press again with steady pressure.

Rule: Never force the peel. A forced peel is the fastest way to lift edges.

5) Finish Press (Recommended)

After peeling, cover the design with parchment paper or a finishing sheet and press again briefly to:

  • Improve adhesion

  • Smooth the print

  • Reduce shine

  • Increase wash durability

  • Create a more “embedded” feel

This step is strongly recommended for professional results.

Best Practices for Different Garments

Cotton & Cotton Blends

  • Usually the easiest and most consistent.

  • Always lint roll and pre-press.

Polyester / Performance Fabrics

  • Use extra care with heat sensitivity.

  • Test press first to prevent scorching or dye migration.

  • Make sure pressure is firm and even.

Hoodies / Fleece

  • Lint roll aggressively (fleece fibers can interfere with bonding).

  • Press on the flattest area possible.

  • Consider using a pressing pillow or pad to avoid seams.

Troubleshooting (Common Issues & Fixes)

Edges Lifting

Causes: Not enough pressure, garment texture, moisture, or poor placement over seams
Fix: Re-press with firm pressure, then finish press with parchment.

Design Not Fully Sticking

Causes: Under-pressing, uneven heat/pressure, garment not pre-pressed
Fix: Pre-press garment, press again with even pressure, then finish press.

Film Won’t Peel Cleanly

Causes: Too hot, too cold, peel timing not right for your setup
Fix: Let it cool slightly, peel slowly, and avoid forcing it.

Shiny Finish

Cause: Direct press contact or excessive heat exposure
Fix: Use parchment for finishing press to soften the surface sheen.

Wash & Care Instructions (Customer-Ready)

For best durability:

  • Wait at least 24 hours before first wash when possible

  • Wash inside out

  • Use cold to warm water and mild detergent

  • Avoid bleach and harsh chemicals

  • Tumble dry low or hang dry

  • Do not iron directly on the print
